EU Is Another Problem of Russia En Route to WTO
The WTO consulting talks that are currently held in Washington by Russia’s negotiators and spokesmen of the U.S. president’s administration and of European Union may end by a scandal. Sources with the U.S. Department of State said yesterday they doubt Russia’s ability to agree with Europe on the WTO admission by the end of 2007.
Led by Maxim Medvedkov, the delegation of WTO negotiators of Russia arrived in Washington Sunday. On Monday, Medvedkov met with Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for WTO Dorothy Dwoskin to deliberate on the bilateral WTO market access agreement of Russia and the United States.
Tuesday and Wednesday are the days of Medvedkov’s talks with the EU envoys, where the United States acts as intermediary. The problems of Russia are material, a source with the U.S. administration said by results of the meeting with Ms Dwoskin.
So far, the deadline for completing the talks announced by Russia’s Economic Development Minister German Gref (late 2007) has nothing to do with reality, the source said, explaining that Moscow has failed to meet requirements put forward by Europe.
In Russia’s Economic Development Ministry, they refused to comment on the progress in the talks yesterday. Officially, no WTO negotiations are underway in the United States now, and the matter at stake is just “some informal consulting.”
