Davydenko Crashes Out in Indian Wells
Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko conceded to Britain’s Andy Murray 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 at the Indian Wells Masters on Thursday. In the women’s draw, Vera Zvonareva lost to China’s Li Na. Svetlana Kuznetsova now is the only Russian left in competition.
World number four Nikolay Davydenko did not find the right weapon to overcome Britain’s favorite Andy Murray.
After being broken in the opener, the Scot won three points in a row and later reeled off from 0-30 to go 4-3 up before taking the tie-break 7-3. An early break in the second set and Davydenko’s 42 unforced errors were enough for Murray to seal a straight-set win 7-6 (7-3) 6-4. The British number one now goes on to pay eight seed Tommy Haas in quarter-finals.
“I served a few aces and on the important points hit some big serves,” the Scot said.
Elsewhere, Vera Zvonareva was dumped out by Li Na in a match that marked the Chinese’s stunning comeback. Zvonareva, who ousted fellow Russian Maria Sharapova in the previous round, did not seem at her best throughout the match on Wednesday and talked to her coach at the courtside in-between sets.
Li broke Zvonareva, twice in the first set and twice in the second. The Chinese battled up from 5-1 down in the second set, winning six games in a row. Saving two set points on her way, Li finally sealed a 6-4 7-5 victory
Svetlana Kuznetsova, the only Russian in competition in Indian Wells, will next faces Nicole Vaidisova.
