Chief Suspect of Klebnikov’s Murder Fled Away
Yesterday, the Moscow City Court issued an arrest warrant and launched the search for missing defendant, Chechnya’s native Kazbek Dukuzov, who is charged with involvement in killing Paul Klebinkov, the editor-in-chief of Forbes Russia.
The initial intention of the Moscow City Court on Wednesday was first to go through appeals filed by lawyers of Chechnya’s natives Musa Vakhaev and Kazbek Dukuzov and then to choose jurors. But the Court had to postpone retrial, as only two defendants, Musa Vakhaev and Moscow notary Fail Sadretdinov, showed up to attend the hearing.
The trial is the repeated one actually. The Moscow City Court acquitted Vakhaev and Dukuzov in May but Supreme Court of Russia cancelled the verdict and ordered a new trial.
According to investigators, exactly Dukuzov gunned down Klebnikov in Moscow in July 2004.
Kazbek Dukuzov is in the hospital, in his native Urus-Martan, his lawyer explained, promising he will arrive at the Moscow City Court once he is well again. But, as Dukuzov broke the hearing for the second time (first time on February 15), the judge issued an arrest warrant for him, released Vakhaev under the recognizance not to leave and postponed the trial till Dukuzov is arrested. As to Sadretdinov, he is serving a sentence for some unrelated crime, and will surely attend all hearings of Klebnikov’s murder.
“Kazbek really lived in Urus-Martan, but has recently left in unknown direction,” said Umar Avtaev, chief of the criminal investigators of Urus-Martan region, signaling it may take time to ensure Dukuzov’s attendance.
