The Choice Is Made
March 11 parliamentary elections in 14 regions of Russia ended by the well-predicted victory of United Russia. However, the key result of that final rehearsal of December elections to the State Duma is the list of parties with the best chances to advance to the future parliament.
“The fact that four parliamentary parties showed success at elections signals the political area has been basically established,” Vladislav Surkov, who is the deputy chief of president’s administration and the Kremlin’s key political strategist, told reporters yesterday to clarify the effect of elections on the party system of the country.

So, the parties currently represented in the State Duma have strong chances to sail to the future parliament. They are United Russia, Spravedlivaya Rossia (Fair Russia), CPRF and LDPR. Exactly those parties shared nearly all prize places March 11 and manifested the results showing they will be able to overcome the 7-percent barrier in December.

Secondly, the first run-in of the future system of just a few parties based on two ruling ones proved successful even though Fair Russia failed to emerge as a real and sole rival for United Russia in all regions except the Stavropol territory.

Moreover, Fair Russia was competing not against United Russia but rather against CPRF, and the ratio was in favor of the latter. The communists averaged with 16.1 percent of vote in 14 regions, while Fair Russia had just 15.4 percent. United Russia was beyond reach with its 44.5 percent.
