United Aircraft Corporation to Fly into Empty Niche
// Russia might begin developing Il-86 aircraft
The United Aircraft Corporation (OAK) will support the new project for developing and producing a wide-body short- and middle-range passenger aircraft to replace Il-86. OAK believes that international producers have not yet occupied the niche of aircrafts of this type and size. Aviation experts agree that the plane will be in demand, but on the condition that production begins soon, and that the price is competitive. Experts estimate the market capacity for such planes at minimum 400 aircrafts, and the necessary investment – at $200-500 million.
The United Aircraft Corporation (OAK) plans to undertake developing and producing a new wide-body short- and middle-range passenger jet based on long-range Il-96-300, with capacity of 275-350 passengers, and 4,000-5,000 kilometers flight range.
OAK president Alexei Fedorov believes there are no aircrafts of this type in the world now, except the out-dated Il-86 (designed in 1970s, capacity – up to 350 people, flight range – up to 3,800 kilometers).
Meanwhile, the issue of implementing and financing the project is still under discussion. The project to replace Il-86 is not on the list of federal budget financing.
