Investments in Russia Up Lower than Expected
Direct foreign investments in Russia rose 4.6 percent in 2006, to $13 billion, officials said Tuesday, putting in question reports about an investment boom in Russia. Analysts dismiss the growth rates as too low.
The amount of foreign investment in Russia went up 2.7 percent last year, to $55.109 billion, while direct foreign investments climbed 4.6 percent to reach $13.678 billion.
Nataliya Orlova from Alfa Banks is skeptical about the accuracy of the data, citing the UNCTAD’s evaluation of direct foreign investments in Russia as $28 billion. Earlier, the Russian Central Bank has named $31 billion as the amount of last year’s investments in its early estimate.
According to the Russian Statistics Agency, portfolio investments in Russia were worth $3.182 billion while other investments amounted to $38.2 billion.
Cyprus accounted for 22.6 percent of foreign investments in Russia, the Netherlands for 16.4 percent and Luxembourg for 16 percent.
The official data shows that $43.4 billion of accumulated investments were in manufacturing industries, which is more than in wholesale and retail trade – $30.5 billion or mining operations – $29.5 billion.
