Iran Reaches Out for Stars
Iran has successfully launched its first rocket into space, an aerospace official said Sunday. The statement was made ahead of the meeting of the UN Security Council in London which will discuss further sanctions against Iran. Sources in the Russian Defense Ministry report that Russian military systems have not detected any space launches.
Mohsen Bahrami, head of the Iranian aerospace agency, told the state television on Sunday that Iran has launched a rocket into space. The official also dropped a hint that Teheran was nearing the creation of an intercontinental missile.
The report, however, was amended a few hours later. Mr. Bahrami’s deputy dismissed the report that Iran had fired a rocket into space. He said it was only a sounding rocket that takes measurements in the atmosphere for research purposes.
A Kommersant source in the Defense Ministry say that Russian military systems have not detected any space launches from Iran.
The menacing reports were shown at the moment when the Iranian nuke program crisis is high as ever. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Friday compared the country’s nuclear program to a runaway train without any breaks. He added that he had thrown away the train’s reverse gear. U.S. Secretary of State Rice responded by saying: “They don’t need a reverse gear. They need a stop button.”
UN Security Council permanent members and Germany will meet in London on Monday to discuss ways to stop the Iranian train of nuclear ambitions.
