Two More Bird Flu Outbreaks outside Moscow
Three more outbreaks of avian flu were recorded in Moscow Region on Tuesday, raising the total number of problem areas to eight. The new cases have been traced down to a single Moscow market. Veterinary officials insist that chicken-meat is absolutely safe to eat.
Bird flu was found in Eroshevskiye Dachi and the village of Solodovo outside Moscow on Tuesday. The deadly chickens were burnt. All poultry in the area are being vaccinated. The H5N1 strain was earlier detected in five locations in Moscow Regions.
The infected poultry was bought on the Ptichiy Market in southwest Moscow. The market was sealed off and quarantined on Tuesday. All the birds were culled. A ten-km sanitary zone was set up around the market.
Police investigates how the deadly chickens happened to be on sale on the market. Russian veterinary officials expect more local outbreaks within two or three days.
Meanwhile, Russian chief sanitary officer Gennady Onishchenko called on Muscovites not to give up eating chicken-meat. “This particular strain does not pose any threat to humans,” Mr. Onishchenko said Tuesday.
