Mauresmo Beats Clijsters in Belgium
Top seed Amelie Mauresmo overpowered Kim Clijsters on Sunday to win a ˆ1-million-worth diamond-encrusted racquet at a WTA event in Antwerp. Elsewhere, Russian teenager Yaroslava Shvedova has scored her first career win in India.
France’s Amelie Mauresmo spoiled Kim Clijsters’ last appearance on home turf with a 6-4 7-6 (7-4) win in the Diamond Games final in Antwerp. The top seed became the first player to win three Antwerp titles in a row, receiving a diamond-studded trophy for this achievement.

“I said all week I didn’t think about it, but honesty I thought about it the whole week,” Mauresmo admitted.

The Belgian lost her opening service game before breaking back in the fourth game. But soon she handed the serve back to the French who took the first set. Clijsters fought back from two break points down in the tie-brake to level at 4-4 before Mauresmo won three points in a row, sealing a straight-sets victory.

Clijsters was playing her last match in Belgium before retiring later this year.

In India’s Bangalore, Yaroslava Shvedova, world number 143, saw off defending champion Mara Santagelo of Italy to win her first WTA tour title on Friday. The Russian 19-year-old came into the tournament having won just two main draw matches on the Tour.
