New York County Abolishes N-Word
The Westchester County Legislature, NY, has declared the “symbolic elimination” of the so-called N-word in this county north of Manhattan. A similar decision may soon be passed in New York City.
Westchester has become the first area in the United States to ban the use of words like nigro, nigger and nigga. The so-called N-word resolution passed unanimously on Monday in the county, saying the word “is used in an ignorant and derogatory fashion to demean a black person.”
However, some American lawyers believe that the ban on the use of certain words infringes on free speech.
A similar resolution was proposed earlier this month in New York City.
In Washington, Rep. Charles Rangel, a Democrat, has been talking with Congressional Black Caucus members about taking a similar action in Congress.
