Russian Internet to Get an Upgrade
The Russian Scientific Research Institute for Public Networks has announced work to set up exchange points for Internet traffic has begun in all Russian cities with a population of a million or more. Now local traffic will be circulate within its own region, instead of going through Moscow or St. Petersburg. That will reduce costs and increase speed on the Internet. The institute will work on the project with RTKomm.ru serving as a consultant.
Of the 13 Russian cities with populations over 1 million, only Moscow, St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk have Internet exchanges. General director of RTKomm.ru Pavel Tereshchenko said that the first new exchange will be launched this year. The project's budget has not been disclosed, but experts estimate that several million dollars would be necessary for it, which could not be recouped in the foreseeable future.

The Russian Scientific Research Institute for Public Networks is the operator of the Russian Backbone Network. RTKomm.ru, 68 percent of the shares of which belong to Sinterra, controls about 45 percent of the Russian market for operational services for access to the Internet. It owns a branched IP network in Russia that uses MPLS-VPN technology. Its predicted proceeds for 2006 are $146 million.

According to the ROMIR Monitoring company, the number of Russians using the Internet at least one a month increased to 21 percent in 2006, as compared to 10 percent in 2003. The number of registered domains in the .ru zone rose 60.7 percent last year to exceed 700,000.
