Obama Announces His Presidential Bid
Senator Barack Obama of Illinois announced his candidacy for the U.S. presidency on Saturday. Having joined the race, he will first have to secure the nomination from the Democratic party, a field dominated by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Mr. Obama presented himself on Sunday as a man who could give America a breath of fresh air.
Standing before the Old State Capitol in Springfield where Abraham Lincoln began his political career, Mr. Obama invoked a speech President Lincoln gave here in 1858 condemning slavery. In 2004, Barack Obama was elected the first black American Senator. Last Sunday, he started his campaign to become America’s first black president.

“Each and every time, a new generation has risen up and done what’s needed to be done,” he said. “Today we are called once more, and it is time for our generation to answer that call.”

Analysts in Washington note to Mr. Obama’s insufficient experience in national politics, particularly in contrast to vast political knowledge of Senator Hillary Clinton. Barack Obama, however, managed to make it look his advantage. “I know that I haven’t spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington,” he admitted. But I’ve been there long enough to know that the ways of Washington must change.”
