Polish Prime Minister Reacts to Article
Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski warned Russia that applying economic restrictions to Warsaw would be tantamount to imposing sanctions on the whole of the European Union. That was his reaction to an article published in Kommersant entitled “Poland Obstructs the EU with Russia” about possible consequence to Warsaw of the collapse of negotiations between Russia and the EU, engineered by Poland.
Kaczynski made his announcement Tuesday evening after a meeting of the government. “If Moscow applies economic sanctions to Warsaw, it will mean that Russian is imposing sanctions against the European Union,” the prime minister said. The dispute between Russia and Poland over exports of Polish meat to Russia, he said, is really a question of whether Russia acknowledges Poland as a member of the EU. “Under the Russia-EU agreement now existing, Russia cannot use such methods against Poland, Kaczynski said. If Russia does impose sanctions, Poland “of course” will not repeal its veto, he added.
Kaczynski demanded in November that Brussels punish Moscow for its ban on Polish agricultural produce. That demand was not heeded. Nor has Brussels reacted to the prime ministers latest statements. The Polish media made them the center of attention yesterday, however, displacing controversy over the placement of American weapons systems in Poland and the resignation of the government. The Kremlin told Polish media that it neither confirms nor denies the Kommersant information.
