Uranium-Enrichment Celebrations
// Iran intends to become a nuclear power
Tehran threw a new challenge at the world community. Iran’s leader Mahmud Ahmadinejad promised that already next week an underground nuclear facility in Natanz will begin installing a cascade of 3,000 centrifuges, and Iran “will celebrate its turning into a nuclear power”. Moreover, Iranian authorities refused yesterday to let in IAEA inspectors to that facility and to install surveillance cameras there.
Western experts believe that engineering works in Natanz have already begun before Ahmadinejad’s statement. Iran’s leader said that “any new sanctions against Iran will not affect the country”. Tehran’s new audacity strengthened long-existing apprehensions that the U.S. might invade Iran.
US Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said that Iran’s nuclear ambitions threaten the U.S. and Israel. She called on the White House to begin talks with Iran, Syria, Hamas, and Hezbollah.
French President Jacques Chirac surprised the world by saying that Iran’s having a couple of warheads will not pose a big danger, but if Tehran uses nuclear weapon against Israel, it will lead to Iran’s immediate destruction. Press service of Élysée Palace later tried to retract Chirac’s remarks, saying that French president had been misunderstood, and that Paris’ official policy is still to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
