Russian Lawyers Launch TV Channel
A session of the Russian Lawyers Association overhauled its executive committee on Tuesday, appointing Sergey Stepashin chairman. The Association is seeking a right to give a preliminary approval to nominees for top legal positions in the country. The session also announced the creation of a law TV channel and discussed ways to raise law-awareness in Russia.
The guest list of yesterday’s session of the Russian Lawyers Association could boast such high-ranking officials as Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, the presidium’s chairman, Justice Minister Vladimir Ustinov and Prosecutor General Yury Chaika.

Sergey Stepashin, head of the Audit Chamber, was elected chairman of the association. Duma deputy Pavel Krasheninnikov was appointed to chair the executive committee of the association, replacing Vladislav Grib. Mr. Krasheninnikov voiced plans of setting up offices of free legal aid across the country, a project to be financed by private sponsors. “Legal awareness stabilizes the society,” he said encouraging large companies and well-off Russians to donate.

The Lawyers Association revealed plans to set up Law TV. The TV channel is expected to go on air in the NTV-Plus satellite network first, director general of Gazprom Media, owner of NTV-Plus, said Tuesday.

Finally, the association passed a decision to give an early approval to candidates for all top legal positions in Russia. Legal basis for a NGO to give the go-ahead for state appointments are quite murky, though.
