Antiwar Protests Draw Thousands in the US
Thousands-strong antiwar demonstrations swept across the United States last weekend. The rallying crowds demanded an immediate end to the war in Iraq and return of American soldiers. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton called on U.S. President Bush to leave Iraq before 2009 as she started her first presidential campaign road show.
Tens of thousands of protesters converged on the National Mall in Washington on Saturday to oppose President Bush’s plan to increase troops in Iraq. The event drew demonstrators from across the country. The Reverend Jesse Jackson, actors Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins as well as a number of high-standing politicians addressed the crowd. Organizers called it one of the largest shows of antiwar sentiment in the nation’s capital since the war began.

Meanwhile, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton began her presidential campaign road show in Iowa, the first of the first-in-the-nation nominating caucuses, on Saturday. Mrs. Clinton called on President Bush to “extricate our country” from Iraq by the time he leaves office in 2009.

One person in the audience, however, reminded Senator Clinton of her vote authorizing military action in Iraq in 2002. She replied by quoting from her speech in 2002 about that vote, saying it was not cast “for pre-emptive war,” but rather as leverage for the president to work diplomatic channels. Hillary Clinton insisted, though, that she whole-heartedly supports everyone who opposes the war in Iraq.
