World Economic Forum Gets Underway
The growing influence of oil exporting nations is high on the agenda at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Russia is to be represented by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
The World Economic Forum opens in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday to last through Sunday. This year’s theme, The Shifting Power Equation, focuses on the growing prominence of emerging economies and the increasing leverage of commodity suppliers. The meeting brings together 24 heads of state, 85 ministers, 24 ambassadors, 85 heads of international organizations and 800 chief executives. Outgoing BP CEO John Browne is to co-chair the summit.
The Russian delegation is to be quite impressive – apart from the WEF’s regular German Gref and his team, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is heading to Davos. He is to arrive in Davos on Thursday ready to answer the forum’s questions. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is expected to comment Wednesday on the European energy strategy of Gazprom, the company where Mr. Medvedev heads the board.
German Gref will assist his colleague. However, the main task at the forum is to give a presentation of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum in June. The summit’s organizers hope that it will be as successful in the last year before presidential election in Russia as the G8 summit in St. Petersburg.
