Hewlett-Packard Carried Research to St. Petersburg
Leading world producer of computer hardware Hewlett-Packard opened HP Lab research center in St. Petersburg. The lab will develop data management technologies and search systems for large corporations. Experts think that HP is looking for cheaper human resources in developing countries, to reduce expenses on IT research and development.
Computer hardware producer HP opened its seventh international research center HP Lab in Russia. Such labs already exist in Beijing (China), Bangalore (India), Bristol (Great Britain), Haifa (Israel), Tokyo (Japan), and Palo-Alto (California, the U.S.).

Experts say that it was quite logic to open HP Lab in St. Petersburg. The universities of Russia’s northern capital are those few in the world that meet the requirements of foreign IT companies. Besides, a number of international IT companies (Intel, NEC, Siemens Communications, Motorola, SUN, Google) already have their R&D centers in St. Petersburg.

By opening its lab in Russia, HP hopes to considerably reduce expenses on R&D, for it is much more expensive in the U.S., and the quality in Russia is often better. HP follows the trend of international corporations: assembly is transferred to Asian countries, and R&D – to India and Russia.
