Fidel Castro Close to Immortality
Cuban leader Fidel Castro is likely to be nearing death. The Comandante is battling to save his life, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said Friday, comparing the man to the late Che Guevara.
There have been steady reports since Monday suggesting that Castro’s condition is extremely serious. Earlier this week, the Spanish El Pais newspaper reported that the Cuban leader had undergone three unsuccessful surgeries after opting for a risky medical procedure that led to grave complications. Dr. Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido, who examined the Cuban leader in December, did not confirm this information but admitted that the operation gave serious complications.

The reports were confirmed on Friday when Hugo Chavez, Venezuelan President and Castro’s close friend, had to say that the Cuban leader faced a hard struggle. Chavez spoke at the Mercosur Latin American trade summit in Brazil with a rare admission that Castro “is struggling for life”. “I don’t know when Fidel will,” the Venezuelan president said. “I hope he lives 80 more years, I hope he lives 100 more years.”

Chavez compared the Comandante to the guerrilla leader Che Guevara as the one “who never dies”. The words, however, sounded as if the Cuban leader is indeed near death.
