New Charges for Khodorkovsky
// Prosecutor General’s Office is ready to charge him with money laundering
Prosecutor’s Office moved him from colony to pre-trial detention center
Former YUKOS head Mikhail Khodorkovsky and MENATEP head Platon Lebedev were moved to Chita’s pre-trial detention center yesterday. Their lawyers believe that new charges will come, -- the charges of the money laundering case which has been investigated for over 2 years already. That is why, the lawyers think, Salavat Karimov, special cases investigator of the Prosecutor General’s Office, was summoned back from Bashkiria for the YUKOS case.
Platon Lebedev’s lawyer Evgeny Baru said that investigatory actions for YUKOS money laundering case will be held in Chita. Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev have been in the case for a long time, but they have not received charges so far.
The notification inviting lawyers to Chita is signed by Salavat Karimov, special cases investigator of the Prosecutor General’s Office. He was summoned back to Moscow from the position of first deputy prosecutor of Bashkiria in early December, -- to “finish” the YUKOS case, believe the lawyers, for it was Karimov who headed the investigating team in the very beginning of the probe against Khodorkovsky and Lebedev.
Khodorkovsky is no longer in Krasnokamensk where he was serving his sentence. He was moved to Chita on December 20. There is no information about Lebedev. “He might be already in Chita, or on his way there,” said Baru.
Khodorkovsky will undergo investigatory actions on December 26, and Lebedev – on December 27. The lawyers of both defendants are getting ready to go to Chita. They suspect the location is chosen so as to make their work harder, for there is a six-hour difference with Moscow’s time.
Khodorkovsky’s lawyer Yuri Schmidt reminded that the probe should be held where the crime was committed. So, if Moscow is mentioned as a place where criminal actions happened, the lawyers may demand to move their defendants to the capital.
