The prize was established in 2000 by the Triumph – New Age Foundation. That independent foundation has an annual budget of $2 million. It is sponsored by political emigrant Boris Berezovsky, Head of the Georgian national Olympic Committee Badri Patarkatsishvili and Nikolay Glushkov, who was implicated in the so-called “Aeroflot case.”
