Hampel Admits Russian Origin
A suspected spy going under the name Paul William Hampel admitted Russian origin yesterday. Hampel was arrested in Montreal airport November 14, 2006 and will probably be deported from Canada very soon.
Paul William Hampel said he had used forged documents, revealed he was Russian and agreed to the soon deportation, one of his attorneys said yesterday.

The judge that tries the case confirmed the information but declined to disclose the real name of the accused to protect him and his family.

A man claiming to be Paul William Hampel was detained November 14 in the Trudeau Airport, carrying fake documents, about $7,000 in different currencies, three cellular phones together with five SIM cards, two digital cameras and a shortwave radio. The set proved enough to evoke suspicions.

According to Canadian authorities, Hampel had been undercover in the country for more than a decade. Past week, an officer of Canada’s counterintelligence (introduced as Anthony) said that Hampel had been acting as an agent of Russia’s SVR foreign intelligence service usually used for counter-terror actions or economic spying.

SVR has been denying any links with Hampel since his arrest. But the spy has probably made a deal with investigators and admited his Russian origin.
