Pinochet Given Absolution
Chilean former dictator Augusto Pinochet, 91, was released from the house arrest yesterday. Pinochet suffered a heat attack past Sunday and underwent surgery in hospital. The family insisted on last sacrament, while doctors say Pinochet’s condition is stable but serious.
Former dictator Augusto Pinochet is in a military hospital in the Chilean capital Santiago now. Pinochet, who survived a heart attack Sunday, had to undergo surgery. His condition is serious but stable, according to the doctors.
The rumors that Pinochet is dying have been long afloat. Though indirectly, they were confirmed November 25. For the first time in history, Pinochet admitted guilt for all crimes of his regime and acknowledged that he had used dictator’s methods to rule the country. The dictator was too weak to address the public himself and the speech was delivered on his behalf.
The closest supporters of ailing dictator are not misled by recovery hopes. They remained in front of the hospital Monday, praying and crying for Pinochet. Moreover, the surviving chances of Pinochet don’t appear weighty even to the judges. At least the Court of Appeals released him from home arrest yesterday.
