Britain Police to Interrogate in Moscow
A taskforce of London Scotland Yard counter-terror division is due to arrive in Moscow today to probe into the lethal poisoning of former FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko.
Nine officers of Scotland Yard are due to arrive in Moscow to interrogate three former officers of Federal Security Service (Russian abbreviation is FSB) and today’s businessmen Andrey Lugovoy, Dmitry Kovtun and Vyacheslav Sokolenko, who had met Alexander Litvinenko in London Millenium Mayfair November 1. According to London police, Litvinenko had been poisoned by radioactive polonium-210 on that day and died in hospital 22 days after it.
More likely than not, the London police have some questions to Valentin Velichko, retired colonel and today’s leader of Honor & Dignity organization of foreign intelligence veterans. The letter that Litvinenko received from Mario Scaramella called Velichko the mastermind of a raft of attempted murders, including the attempt on Scaramella’s life.
But the Scotland Yard will be able to interrogate Russian witnesses provided the officers have an international investigating mandate, said famous lawyer Pavel Astakhov. With no formalities met, the evidences gathered by Britain’s police here will have no legal effect, the lawyer explained, pointing out Scotland Yard wouldn’t be able even to summon Russia’s citizens for interrogation, as the invitation wouldn’t be binding for them.
