British Telecom Licensed for Half Russia
Britain’s telecom giant, British Telecom, has received the telecom license for Russia. Even though BT is still targeted at supporting available clients, it will attempt to press local players on the market, the analysts speculate.
In three weeks after the launch of its Moscow office, British Telecom (BT) announced it received the telecom license for 38 regions of Russia. BT will cover the whole country in course of time but begin with 38 regions, where its key clients are operating, a source with the company said.
Overall, BT has 234 clients here, mostly transnational corporations and some big companies of Russia.
BT will win 3-percent of telecom market of the country in the following two or three years, vowed Richard van Wageningen, BT president for Russia/CIS. The analysts are skeptical about these plans of BT. “The available clients will give no more than 1.5 percent to 2 percent,” said Vladislav Kochetkov from Finam. The 2 percent is a great deal actually, the more so that Finam forecasts the telecom market to reach $22 billion in 2006.
In Russia, British Telecom will focus on IP-telephony, convergent services, outsourcing and SRM systems. For this purpose, BT will construct a network covering 50 regions. The Moscow office of BT declined to specify the budget. The admission ticket will cost at least $100 million to the company, the analysts forecast.
