Norway to Feed from Russia
Norway’s Varanger Kraft AS will probably construct a power line to Russia to import energy from the Kola Peninsula. Russia exports energy to Scandinavia at ˆ30/MW to ˆ40/MW and will be able to earn roughly $150 million as a result.
Varanger Kraft expressed its will to construct a power line from the Kola Peninsula to Russia when meeting managers of Kolenergo (TGC-1), representatives of the latter announced Friday. The Norway’s estimate of the project budget is $47 million.
The power line, which project has been sanctioned by the government of Norway already, could run from the Skogfoss Power Plant in Norway towards Nickel-village in the Murmansk Region. The dates of launching the project haven’t been determined so far, nor have been the dates of deliveries’ startup.
The market analysts say Russia will profit more by constructing the power line from the Kola Peninsula to Norway than by laying it to the continent.
Constructing a power line to the continent doesn’t appear reasonable, as it will call for heavy spending, said sources with System Operator – Central Controller Department (Russian abbreviation is SO-TsDU). On the other hand, a new power line will be the first step towards synchronizing energy systems of Russia and Europe, which is needed for import and export relations between the countries.
