Mobile Phones to Pick Up Broadcasts of Beijing Olympics
Sistema Mass Media intends to launch a new service for mobile phone owners in mid.-2008. In 16 cities of Russia, its subsidiary is buying companies with frequencies enabling the mobile phones to pick up TV broadcasts. The analysts are rather skeptical about this project of Sistema, attributing doubts to failure of mobile TV in other states.
Sistema Mass Media’s subsidiary – TsTV (Digital TV Broadcasting) - will broadcast the live TV programs to mobile phones by using DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld) technology, which is supported by Nokia and SonyEricsson. Similar services are rendered in Finland and Italy now.

Nowadays, TsTV is buying firms with frequencies for mobile digital broadcast in 16 cities of Russia, said a source with Sistema. In Sistema Mass-Media, they neither gave names of the target regions nor specified the acquired companies.

According to the source, the broadcasting systems will be created in cooperation with South Korean SK Mobile and Deutsche Telekom T-Systems. “We plan to launch the service by 2008, by Beijing Summer Olympics,” the source specified. The project budget hasn’t been officially disclosed yet, but the experts evaluate it at $1 million for each city.
