Putin Outlines Tasks for the Party in Power
Russian President Vladimir Putin met leaders of the United Russia party in his residence of Novo-Ogaryovo on Friday to discuss the party’s initiatives for the session on December 2. It is the first time that the president speaks to Russia’s chief party before its annual session.
The president invited United Russia’s leader Boris Gryzlov and other high-ranking officials of the party – Vyacheslav Volodin, Andrey Vorobyev, Sergey Shoigu, Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov and Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiev. Vladimir Putin congratulated United Russia on wins at regional election where the party in power mustered some 40-50 percent of the vote and won the majority in regional legislatures.

The Russian president listed issues that the party should address at the State Duma. He pushed for a quick adoption of the law on the so-called maternity capital to make sure it can be enforced next year. Putin also spoke about the gambling bill which restricts gambling in Russia to four special zones. He asked United Russia’s leadership to be firm and rebuff gambling lobbyists.

In addition, Vladimir Putin highlighted labor migration issues and the atomic energy bill which will help make Russian atomic energy machinery more competitive in Russia and abroad. United Russia has already entered atomic energy on the priority list of new industrial policy which is to be adopted at the upcoming party session.

“It was a landmark meeting,” United Russia’s Vyacheslav Volodin told Kommersant. “The president believes that United Russia should retain leadership in Russian politics.”
