AMD Sells Facilities to Russia
A deal that will be the biggest on Russia’s market of microelectronics is being prepared now. Zelenograd Angstrem is buying out from AMD its microchip production facilities in Germany to deliver them to Russia. The analysts estimate the deal budget at $250 million to $300 million.
Russia’s office of AMD confirmed information about the deal yesterday but declined to elaborate. However a source close to Angstrem owners shed light on some details on condition of anonymity. According to the source, Zelenograd Angstrem will obtain equipment of AMD’s Dresden plant allowing to annually produce up to 12 million chips under the 0.13-microne technology.
“The equipment will be dismantled and delivered to the South Industrial Area of Zelenograd. Facilities in Russia will provide for making product worth up to $1 billion a year," said a high-ranked representative of one of the parties involved in the deal.
The better part of Angstrem’s product will be exported, the source specified, adding the project budget will probably step up to $700 million in the following few years. Angstrem’s top managers and owners couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.
Angstrem was set up in 1993 in Zelenograd. It makes microcontrollers, crystals for microprocessors and other microelectronics. Sergey Veremeenko, former co-owner of Mezhprombank, holds the majority stake.
