Mordovia’s Policemen Shot to Death in Chechnya
In Mordovia, yesterday was a day of mourning for seven policemen shot to death from ambush in Shatoisk district of Chechnya November 7, 2006. Only one policeman survived the attack. It was the biggest loss of Federal troops in Chechnya over the past year.
Policemen of Mordovia’s OMON fell into an ambush on the mountain road from the village Nokhch-Keloy to Kenkhi-village. They were driving from Khankala to the base of temporary deployment. Caught-off the guard, OMON fighters had no time even to use weapons. There was no place to hide from the massed and intense fire – the vehicles broke into flame after the first shots.

A group of military that followed the police was the first to arrive at the place of tragedy. The soldiers found five bodies and a wounded officer there. The remains of two more policemen were discovered in the nearby gorge in a few hours.

All attempts to arrange chasing militants hot on the trail were without effect. “Not every local can find the way there,” the police said.

The death toll spells out seven names, including Captain Sergey Pivtsaikin, who led the group of Mordovia’s OMON, and his subordinates – Captain Nikolay Murlaev, Senior Lieutenant Alexey Lashmanov, Lieutenant Boris Bibnev, Senior Sergeants Alexey Shutov and Alexey Elkhovsky and Warrant Officer Vitaly Golubin. Seriously wounded Major Yury Belyakov survived the attack.
