Japanese Whisky to Challenge Whisky of Scotland in Russia
Japanese Suntory launches its whisky in Russia in an effort to conquer 10 percent to 15 percent of the country’s market by 2010. The market analysts are skeptical, specifying the whisky of Scotland is the market leader here, while Suntory is dragging behind in terms of the distribution.
Suntory launches its seven whisky brands in Russia in November, delivering by the end of this year 84,000 liters to stores in Moscow, St. Petersburg and HoReCa segment, said Veld-21 General Director Georgy Ilyichev. Veld-21 is the exclusive supplier of Suntory to Russia.

Overall, the company intends to sell seven brands of Suntory in Russia with the bottle price ranging from ˆ20 to ˆ160. The stake is made on Royal (retail cost of around ˆ50), which will account for 45 percent of deliveries. The start of the regional expansion is slated for 2007, while the ultimate target is selling roughly 840,000 liters by 2010.

So far, Suntory whisky could be found in Moscow only in some Japanese restaurants. The annual size of the whisky market in Russia is estimated at around $750 million.
