Residence for Vladimir Putin in Kaliningrad
// to increase the region’s status
Kaliningrad region authorities announced that an official residence of Russian president might appear in the region. Three sites for construction have already been chosen, and the region’s officials wait for the presidential administration’s verdict. However, president’s staff did not confirm this information, saying that Kaliningrad officials have probably decided to start an “initiative from below”.
The possible sites for Vladimir Putin’s residence are the resort town of Svetlogorsk, the national park Kurshskaya kosa, or a quiet neighborhood of Kaliningrad. Members of president’s staff and security service agents will arrive to Kaliningrad on October 23 or 24, to examine the sites. If those locations do not correspond to comfort and safety standards, other sites will be looked for.

The idea to build headquarters for Putin in Kaliningrad region is not new. Such offers to the president’s administartion were made back in 2002. Back then, Kaliningrad authorites wanted to build residence near Morskoe village on Kurshskaya sandbar. However, the project was never carried out, partially because Morskoe is very close to Lithuania’s border. Yet, the idea of building a residence was revived last year.

Meanwhile, the president’s staff say there is no decision to build residence in Kaliningrad. Staff spokesman Viktor Khrekov said there should be a political decision, but there is none yet. And there are no documents for construction. Presidential administration said that Kaliningrad officials have probably decided to start an “initiative from below”.
