Champion’s Last Temptation
// Michael Schumacher’s farewell race might be a miracle for his rivals
The career of the most successful Formula One racer of all times, seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, will be ended in San-Paolo, Interlagos autodrome, tomorrow. The German and his team need another miracle to win eighth title and go away unvanquished. Otherwise, they’ll have to resort to a forbidden trick.
Michael Schumacher has been in Formula One for 16 years, and won many record-breaking victories. He now holds 7 titles of world champion. Schumacher won his first one in 1994 when he was racing for Benetton. However, his most significant successes came when he passed to Ferrari in 1996. Schumacher returned championship to the Italian team in 2000, winning 5 times running. The German worked miracles: he could start 16th, and finish first.
Schumacher won his 7 titles after winning 91 Grand Prix. Then he practically abandoned all hopes for eighth title after he failed Japanese Grand Prix, when the motor of his Ferrari car burned down suddenly for the first time since 2000. Consequently, Fernando Alonso of Renault won the race. However, Schumacher never gives up easily, and will try to win by all means.
“Anything might happen in racing. Felipe Massa, or someone else, might be asked to ‘get rid’ of Alonso. It is quite possible,” says famous Russian racer Roman Rusinov. “There was a similar case in my career. In 2003, when I raced for Formula-Audi, I needed to come eighth to become the champion. But the racer who was right behind me on the start field, bumped into me. It was only later that I learned that my rival in the competition sponsored this maneuver to win the title...”
