Cardin Eager to Tailor Olympic Uniform for Russia
The Olympic Committee of Russia (OCR) will soon enter into the biggest sponsor contract in its history. At present, there are two bidders seeking the right to tailor uniform of the Russian national team – famous French designer Pierre Cardin and Bosco di Ciliegi. Irrespective of choice, the deal budget will be at least $7 million.
Pierre Cardin confirmed past weekend the negotiations with OCR chief Leonid Tyagachev. Cardin declined to elaborate, but the sources say the matter at stake is $7-million contract for uniform of Russia’s national team at 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The contacts with Cardin challenge future cooperation with Bosco di Ciliegi, the official uniform provider for three Olympic Games in a row, starting from 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Bosco di Ciliegi may remain the partner actually, said a source with OCR, if it makes an offer more promising than Cardin's.

Bosco di Ciliegi CEO Mikhail Kusnirovich said the respective agreement with OCR expires December 31, 2006, but it provides for the automatic prolongation. “Financial terms of the current contract with OCR could be changed,” Kusnirovich explained. “For this to happen, OCR is to present to us the best offer on equipping sponsorship. We got the documents in September. They spelled out an offer from some limited liability company for the amount of nearly $7 million. Under our agreement with OCR, the contract automatically extends for another Olympic cycle, i.e. till 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, provided we repeat the offer. And we not only did it, we made an offer for much greater amount far back in the mid.-September.”

“I may negotiate even the space flight, but it doesn’t mean I will go there," Kusnirovich said when asked to comment on OCR's contacts with Cardin. "The negotiations could relate not to the sport uniform of the national team but to the uniform in which it will appear during the opening ceremony of Beijing Olympics. And those matters are quite different.”
