Dementieva Saved by Imagination
Five Russians – Maria Sharapova, Vera Zvonareva, Nadia Petrova, Anna Chakvetadze and Elena Dementieva – have advanced to the Kremlin Cup quarter-finals. Another quarter-finalist is world number one Amelie Mauresmo, who overwhelmed Russian Elena Vesnina in a tough battle.
The path to the quarter-finals proved the most strenuous for Elena Dementieva. Suffering from the leg injury, she had asked arrangers to schedule her first match only for Thursday. Though the delay apparently did good to her, Elena was playing beyond the capacity in the yesterday’s match vs. Israel's Shahar Peer, whom she eventually saw off 4-6 7-6 6-3.
“I made myself think as if I were playing for the national team of Russia in the Fed. Cup and I had to win the decisive score for the team. It wasn’t very difficult, the stands were backing me up,” Dementieva said after the match.
Dementieva now faces Swiss Patty Schnyder, who saw off Czech Iveta Benesova.
There will be two Russian pairs in the quarter-finals. Maria Sharapova plays Anna Chakvetadze, who overcame Francesca Schiavone of Italy, and Vera Zvonareva faces Nadia Petrova.
Russian Elena Vesnina failed to cause a sensation of the tournament and eventually yielded to world number one and tournament’s top seed Amelie Mauresmo, despite the stunning victory in the first set (5-7 6-3 7-6).
