Russia to Reconcile Moldova, Transdniestria
Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Grigory Karasin negotiated with Moldova’s President Vladimir Voronin in Chisinau yesterday. In the next effort, Karasin headed for Transdniestria breakaway region of Moldova to talk to the local leader Igor Smirnov there. The aim of Karasin’s moves is persuading the parties to get back to negotiations broken off more than half a year ago.
The highlights of the yesterday’s negotiations of Moldova's President Vladimir Voronin and Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Grigory Karasin were discussing bilateral relation and settlement in Transdniestria.

The current activity of Moscow-Chisinau relations gives a chance for solving all accumulated issues, Karasin said, signaling the parties were quite pleased with results of the talks.

For Moldova, the prime concern is discussing deliveries of Russia’s gas, export of wine and relations in credit and financial sector. But the progress in negotiations is tied to the settlement of Transdniestria’s conflict. Transdniestria is “the key outstanding problem in cooperation of Moldova and Russia,” President Voronin made clear to Karasin yesterday.

Chisinau and Tiraspol have no contacts today. The negotiations broke off in spring, once urged by Moldova, Ukraine closed the border for Transdniestria’s goods if they have no customs clearance of Moldova.
