Davydenko Goes at Full Speed
Nikolay Davydenko rushed to the second round of the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament Tuesday. The tournament’s top seed, Davydenko needed just a bit more than half an hour to crush Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic (6-0 6-0).
The matches of Nikolay Davydenko are usually long. Not this time though. Davydenko played just for 37 minutes to beat Jiri Vanek, who, for some reasons unknown, was unable to take a single game Tuesday. The next rival of Davydenko en route to the quarter-finals is his compatriot Teimuraz Gabashvili.
Former world number one and this tournament’s unseeded, Marat Safin of Russia defeated France's Nicolas Mahut (6-3 6-4) to face Italy's Daniele Bracciali in the next round. Third seed Mikhail Youzhny yielded to Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber (6-2 7-5).
As to the women’s matches, the elite joins the battle only in the second round. The first round news is that Russia’s Elena Vesnina saw off world No. 20 Chinese Li Na (6-2, 1-6 7-6(13-11) in a tough battle. Another Russian, Ekaterina Bychkova beat her compatriot Anastasia Rodionova, while Dinara Safina was overwhelmed by Anna Chakvetadze and Maria Kirilenko yielded to Francesca Schiavone of Italy.
