Bashkir President to Reign for 5 Years More
The State Assembly of Bashkiria unanimously voted for Murtaza Rakhimov yesterday, extending his presidential authority for another five years. Bashkiria’s president for 16 years in a row, Rakhimov enjoyed support of all 119 deputies present at the meeting, including the opposition.
It was Russia’s President Vladimir Putin that nominated Rakhimov for the presidency to Bashkiria’s State Assembly on October 5. Rakhimov spoke from time to time about staying in the office for another five years, but Russia’s authorities were in no hurry to respond, sources with the Kremlin said off-the-record.
The story was quite the opposite, according to Bashkir officials. President Putin proposed the authority extension to Rakhimov many times, but “the decision was postponed by force of subjective and objective reasons,” Bashkir Parliament’s Speaker Konstantin Tolkachev told the local media.
One way or another, the parliament unanimously voted for Rakhimov Tuesday. “I couldn’t say no to president of Russia,” explained Gennady Shabayev, who is the sole deputy of opposition in Bashkiria’s State Assembly.
