Security Council Unites Two Koreas in One Meeting
On Monday, U.N. Security Council unanimously nominated Ban Ki-moon, South Korea's minister of foreign affairs and trade, as U.N. secretary general. Straight after it, the diplomats focused on North Korea and manifested the equal consensus there.
The highlight of the yesterday’s meeting of Security Council held at U.N. headquarters in New York was, of course, the underground nuclear test of North Korea. The diplomats were nearly unanimous when discussing this issue.

The matter at stake is specific response that will build up financial and economic pressure on North Korea. The better part of diplomats enthusiastically backed up the sanctions on the regime, but three delegations – of Russia, China and Qatar – kept silent, a diplomat, who attended the meeting, said on condition of anonymity.

The response doesn’t provide for any military action against North Korea, specified Russia’s Envoy to the U.N. Vitaly Churkin. In principal, Russia may agree to imposing economic sanctions on Pyongyang, Churkin said, as the situation is extraordinary and at stake are nonproliferation and condition of global security as a whole.

The sources say the specific resolution offered by the United States is very tough and includes 10 items. The Security Council is expected to vote on it one of these days.
