Inter RAO UES Shifts to Import
RAO UES CEO Anatoly Chubais has sealed an order sanctioning the revision of export and import strategy of the holding. In winter, RAO intends to materially step up import of electric power from all states of the former Soviet Union.
The order sealed by Chubais provides for elaborating an entirely different strategy of import and export operations for the fourth quarter of this year and the first quarter of 2007. Having faced the consumption growth, the Unified Energy Systems (RAO UES) will be a net importer of electric power rather than a net exporter of it in winter of 2006/07.

“Naturally, we cannot cloud our reputation of reliable suppliers of electric power – neither RAO, nor Inter RAO UES,” Chubais said Friday during All-Russia’s meeting of directors of energy enterprises. “The existing export contracts will be maintained and their execution will be ensured without fail.”

Regardless, sources with RAO UES said the export of electric power could be curtailed in winter, while its import will go up materially.

To be more precise, Inter RAO is likely to import electric power from Ukraine (produced from the gas of Russia under the give-and-take contracts) as well as from Belarus, Moldova (Transdniestria), Kazakhstan (Ekibastuz), Latvia and Lithuania. What’s more, the sources say the company stakes on deliveries from Azerbaijan and Georgia. In this case, the electric power will be shipped under the swap patters to the North Caucasus energy systems, first of all to Sochi.
