Ukraine Shifts to Gas of Asia
Ukraine will have no gas of Russia in 2007 gas balance, Ukrainian Fuel and Energy Minister Yury Boiko vowed, promising to meet all requirements for the account of Central Asian gas and own production in Ukraine. For Ukraine, the effort will enable to maintain the gas cost within $130/ths cu meters to $135/ths cu meters.
It appears Ukraine will attempt to avoid importing Russia’s gas in 2007. There will be no gas of Russia in 2007 balance, Fuel and Energy Minister Yury Boiko vowed Friday. Next year, Ukraine will be importing only the gas of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan with RosUkrEnergo acting as supplier, the minister explained.

Ukrainian Fuel and Energy Ministry said some time earlier that the 2007 contracts made by RosUkrEnergo for Ukraine provide for deliveries of 42 billion cu meters of Turkmen gas, 8.5 billion cu meters of Kazakh gas and 7 billion cu meters of Uzbek gas.

Ukraine is forecasted to consume 77 billion cu meters this year. The total of all gas specified in 2007 contracts and the gas to be produced in Ukraine equals 75.5 billion cu meters. According to October forecasts, the gas consumption in Ukraine will go up by 0.5 billion cu meters this year, and the 2007 consumption is estimated to reach the same amount. So, the gap of between 2 billion cu meters to 2.5 billion cu meters is evident already today.

It is worth mentioning that Russia’s gas monopoly, Gazprom, could be the sole source to cover potential gas shortage in Ukraine in 2007. But Gazprom itself intends to buy the excess gas of Central Asia.
