Valuev Debuts in the U.S. by Crushing Barrett
World’s biggest boxer, Nikolay Valuev of Russia (2.14m, 147kg) set to conquering the United States October 7, 2006. To begin with, the champ defended his WBA heavyweight title in the fight against Monte Barrett of the U.S. in Rosemont, Illinois. The American endured nearly 11 rounds vs. Valuev, which could be viewed as the greatest achievement.
The Rosemont victory wasn’t very easy for Valuev. Monte Barrett tried really hard to stand against the much taller contender. Besides, the Russian wasn’t at his best, his jab lacked efficiency and he didn’t work in series every time he should have done it, allowing Barrett to escape.
But one thing is clear – a good boxer overwhelmed another good boxer that day. In the first round, for instance, Barrett was bold enough to go straightforward and hit the Russian twice. He had to face the return kicks of course, which he firmly endured. The American staked on the clench in the fight and this tactics proved well-justified and enabled him to last nearly for 11 rounds.
Barrett was knocked down once in the eighth round, but managed to continue then. Valuev had to knock down the American two times more before Barrett’s trainer Ali Bashir finally stopped the fight.
Valuev is one of four fighters of the former Soviet Union who hold the boxing belts. The others are Oleg Maskaev (WBC), Vladimir Klitschko (IBF) and Sergey Lyakhovich (WBO).
