Strasbourg Condemns Moscow
The European court of Human Rights (ECHR) made public yesterday the awards sustaining claims under 11 cases, which the individuals had lodged against Russia. The blow to the Moscow image was material and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov urgently stroke back, calling the ECHR resolutions politically motivated.
The web-site of ECHR released yesterday 11 resolutions taken in favor of the individuals that went to law against Russia. The effect on the Moscow image from simultaneous promulgation of such number of negative decisions was obviously detrimental. The Kremlin took the offense the more so that it used the best efforts to strengthen the image while chairing the Council of Europe.

For Moscow, the only thing to do was to again blame the biased attitude on the ECHR. For this purpose, RF Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in Strasbourg that some resolutions of the court were politically motivated.

Meanwhile, Russia is the biggest source of suits submitted to the ECHR. This year, for instance, it accounts for the fifth of 89,000 cases to be tried by the Strasbourg court. Moreover, the number of actions rooting in Russia is stepping up from year to year. The ECHR considered 2,490 claims in 2001, but the number grew to 4,716 next year and to 10,009 in 2005.
