Anna Chakvetadze of Russia won her first WTA tournament once she saw off Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain in the Guangzhou final. Russia's Dmitry Tursunov advanced to the final round of Mumbai Open tennis tournament, where his match vs. Tomas Berdych was put off because of the rain.
Despite the moderate amount of Guangzhou prize fund – just $170,000, the participants of the tournament could be viewed strong enough. The top seed and the favorite was Jelena Jankovic, whom Chakvetadze faced in the semifinals and who retired in the second set referring to the leg injury. Jankovic was trailing Chakvetadze 0-2 in time of withdrawal.
In the final, Chakvetadze crushed fourth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain. Anna had won their three previous matches, including two this year in Berlin and Los Angeles, and didn’t miss the chance to get her first WTA title.
Dmitry Tursunov of Russia advanced to the final round of Mumbai Open tennis tournament, having defeated Spain's Tommy Robredo during the semi-final round September 30, 2006. This victory came just a week after this Russian finally overwhelmed American Andy Roddick 17-15 in the decisive fifth set in the Davis Cup semifinal in Moscow.
Tursunov was to play Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the final round in Mumbai yesterday, but the match was shelved because of the rain.
