Georgia Renames the Kodori Gorge
Georgia commemorated the 13th anniversary of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict yesterday. President Mikhail Saakashvili called the year a failure of Abkhazian militants. He lauded the federal operation on reestablishing order in the Kodori Gorge which marked the beginning of the return of Abkhazia under Tbilisi’s control. The president has also ordered to rename the break-away region Upper Abkhazia.
Georgia marked the Day of Memory and Grief, or the 13th anniversary of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict which stripped Tbilisi of Abkhazia. Georgian authorities said that real progress had been made in settling the Abkhazian conflict. President Mikhail Saakashvili praised a successful operation in the Kodori Gorge. But there are still threats left, the president believes: “We have a range of challenges. Kosovo is soon to become an independent state, while Russia is issuing direct threats that it is going to take our Abkhazia away,” he said. “The comparison between Kosovo and Abkhazia is artificial and crude. Those who want to fish in troubled waters will fail.”

A few days before the anniversary, Mikhail Saakashvili ordered to rename the Kodori Gorge Upper Abkhazia. “This is a territory which makes one-third of Abkhazia, so it will be called Upper Abkhazia. The legitimate government will have its seat in the village of Chkhalta,” the president said.

Mikhail Saakashvili and the Georgian government’s delegation visited the new Upper Abkhazia yesterday. The president opened the headquarters of the Abkhazian government in exile. “Standing here, in Upper Abkhazia, I want to tell the whole world that we are in Abkhazia and we will never leave it,” Saakashvili said, addressing people before the government’s residence. “We have started out comeback in Abkhazia, and it cannot be reversed.”
