Havana Takes Tehran Under its Wing
// Non-aligned united in the struggle for Iran’s rights
The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit ended in Havana on Saturday. Over a hundred NAM states supported Iran’s right to develop nuclear programs by signing the summit’s final resolution. Now when the threat of international sanctions against Iran is higher than ever, Tehran suddenly acquired a powerful support group that seriously opposes those who are for treating Iran’s nuclear issue toughly.
Delegates from 118 countries signed the 100-page resolution confirming the right of all states to carry out research, production of, and using nuclear energy in peaceful purposes.
The resolution underlines that all nuclear materials, on which Iran reported to IAEA, are kept in strictly pre-conditioned places, and are used according to their stated purpose. The delegates added that US and Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear sites would be a violation of international law.
Most ardent anti-US-minded NAM members – Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Syria – support Iran’s nuclear research. Venezuela leader Hugo Chavez is the most fervent supporter, along with the chairman of North Korean parliament Kim Yong Nam.
Sanctions against Iran are now more possible than ever. UN Security Council demanded that Tehran stop its nuclear-enrichment activities. However, Iran did not comply. Thus, any international support will come in handy for Iran now. Meanwhile, the NAM is quite a powerful movement. Hugo Chavez said that “Venezuela will stand by Iran regardless of circumstances,” even in the case of military operation against Iran.
