British Rexam to Supply Cans to Beer Regions of Russia
British Rexam will construct in Russia the second plant that will produce 800 aluminum cans a year and turn it into the biggest can maker in the country. According to market players, one of the reasons that prompted Rexam to build the facility is its failure to buy out the packing division from Rusal.
Rexam announced Thursday it intends to construct two aluminum can enterprises, one in Brazil and one in Russia. The Russian facility will emerge in the Chelayabinsk region; the launch of its first stage has been slated for early 2008. The cans will go to Urals and Siberia, meeting requirements of Vena and Baltika breweries.
The U.S. Alcoa will supply the raw. The parties are said to have sealed the respective contract already.
Russia has three can plants now. One of them belongs to Rexam. It is located in Naro-Fominsk, the Moscow region, and has the annual capacity of 2.4 billion cans. Rusal’s Rostar has two plants (Dmitrov, the Moscow region; Vsevolozhsk, the Leningrad Region) with the aggregate capacity of 3 billion cans. So constructing the second plant of 800 million cans here will make Rexam the market leader in Russia.
