U.S. Alcoa to Bolster Power Industry of Russia
World aluminum leader, the U.S. Alcoa, has launched negotiations with Hydro WGC of Russia to construct a power plant and an aluminum smelter of 300,000-ton capacity.
Hydro WGC (Hydro Wholesale Generating Co.) and Alcoa are in talks about constructing a power plant and an aluminum smelter, said a source close to Hydro WGC. The capacity of the new plant will reach 300,000 tons of primary aluminum and it could be located in the Far East, where Hydro WGC has Bureisk and Zeisk Hydroelectric Stations.
For Alcoa, the closeness to the ports is vital for shipping alumina to Russia to produce aluminum here. Hydro WGC favors the Far East as well. It has some projects in the region, including the chain of Nizhnebureisk and Nizhnezeisk Hydroelectric Stations of more than 700MW capacity and a 5,000MW hydroelectric complex in sothern Yakutia.
Constructing the smelter will cost $900 million approximately. But the metal makers will annually need around 5,000 MWh to ensure production.
By implementing this project, which overall worth is estimated at least at $3-billion, Alcoa will have guaranteed and long-term deliveries of energy at fixed tariff rates, which it has been unable to achieve when negotiating with SUAL about the Komi-Aluminum project.
The terms of the parties’ involvement in the project haven’t been disclosed so far.
