Spirits Are Lifted in Gothenburg
The gold victories of Russia's Andrey Silnov and Tatyana Lebedeva were the most breathtaking in Athletics Championships in Gothenburg on Wednesday. Silnov easily cleared all bars to power to the gold in the men's high jump, while Lebedeva kept the audience in suspense till the last sixth attempt in the triple jump.
Overall, the performance of our team is impressive. Russia has won seven gold medals, eight silver medals and five bronze medals at close of the day four in the European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg.
On Thursday, Russian Tatyana Veshkurova ran the second in women’s 400m, and Olga Zaytseva snatched the bronze, having exhausted, perhaps, in the first 200m. The gold went to Bulgarian Vanya Stambolova. But two Russians, Olga Kotlyarova and Svetlana Klyuka powered to gold and silver respectively in women’s 800m.
In decathlon, Olympic champion Roman Sebrle took the gold, while Russian Alexey Sysoyev climbed to the silver medal, pushing to bronze his compatriot Alexander Pogorelov. Russian Yuriy Andronov walked to the bronze in men’s 50km.
The spirits of Russia were lifted in women’s discus, where Darya Pishchalnikova achieved the shocking victory.
