Abkhaz Police Neutralizes Georgian Legion
A group of Georgian raiders were neutralized in Abkhazia’s Galsky region, Abkhaz Interior Ministry reported Wednesday. A few people were killed and a few wounded in the standoff. Tbilisi rebuffed by calling the occurrence a common brawl of criminals and blamed low efficiency of peacekeeping operation on Russia.
On Wednesday, the unrecognized Abkhazia reported successful carrying out of a special operation in the Galsky region. Sukhumi said they crashed Georgian raiders of the White Legion division at night from Tuesday to Wednesday.
Georgian raiders do show up in Abkhazia from time to time, according to Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba. “Those are the links of one and the same chain, same as the demand to withdraw Russia’s peacekeepers, the recent seizure of the Kodori Gorge and moving the exile government of Abkhazia there. The Georgians do it to discredit us and stir up the feeling that we don’t control the situation.”
Georgia stepped in with another interpretation yesterday. Official Tbilisi called the accident a mere brawl of criminals that Sukhumi tries to turn to advantage.
Also on Wednesday, Georgia decided to agree to the calls of Moscow and Sukhumi to start monitoring in the Kodori Gorge by the U.N. military observers. The counter demand, Georgia said, is that the same mission will monitor the lower part of Kodori and the town of Tkvarcheli, where armed units of Abkhaz separatists are deployed.
